Our work is centred around the 21^st century concept of community cohesion where:

• there is a common vision and sense of belonging for all communities
• the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and valued
• similar life opportunities are available to all, and
• strong and positive relationships exist and continue to be developed in the workplace, in schools and in the wider community.

We aim to support schools with their duty to promote community cohesion  by providing support and guidance to fulfil equalities duties and develop inclusive practice, with a particular focus on race.

The main purpose of Northumberland’s Cultural Diversity in Education strategy is to contribute to the School Improvement Service’s aim of raising standards by building capacity in schools to promote all aspects of community cohesion.
