Since September 2007 schools have been required to promote community cohesion, a legal duty introduced through the Education and Inspections Act 2006. From September 2008, how effective a school is at promoting community cohesion has been part of the Ofsted inspection framework.
The duty is also part of the Every Child Matters agenda and the Children's Plan 2007 (DCSF) which says that,
'schools are well placed to become a focal point for the local community and to foster better relationships between diverse communities'
This area of the website sets the schools' duty in a national context as part of a wider social agenda, and gives guidance on how to develop all aspects of your school's work with an explicit focus on community cohesion.
