Curriculum

The global dimension is one of the important aspects of how we organise learning, demonstrated in the QCA big picture of the curriculum.

The new secondary curriculum pages from the QCA have a series of case studies demonstrating opportunities to incorporate  the global dimension and sustainability in teaching and learning across the curriculum. There is also a section explaining the relevance of this cross curriculum dimension to the new secondary curriculum.

This section of the web site will also be a resource to share examples of good practice from teachers and consultants in Northumberland.

Please do contact us if you have examples you would like to share.

Secondary Teaching and Learning

Nick Sandemann, Secondary Science Consultant has shared a KS3 resource. Teaching Global Issues in Science.

Six Northumberland Middle and high schools are taking part in the pilot of an exciting new teaching resource based on a popular Kenyan soap opera. Makutano Junction has a range of dedicated resources, and the opportunity to watch 4 series of the programme. Northumberland teachers are using these and developing teaching ideas in areas as varied as Learning to Learn, RE, English, Maths and Citizenship, addressing themes like poverty and wealth, relationships, HIV and aids, equality and diversity.

Some comic based resources, using stills form the programme have been made by Gill Finch, using the program Comic Life, which has been licenced for use in all Northumberland schools. If you'd like support to use this in your school, contact Steve Robson, Secondary ICT Consultant.

The resources are:

PP and Red's Relationship and Red's Letter, relating to the secret romance developing between the young people in spite of their parents' disapproval.(Episodes 4 to 7 of Series 1)

Internet cafe and Bobby's arrival look at the e-safety topic of online dating and teenage girls, from episode 7 of series 4, and from episode 8, looking at the consequences of meeting a stranger who has assumed a false identity online, there is Day after the date.

There is also a curriculum resource for RE teachers of KS4, looking at connections between the QCA Programme of study and some of the themes and episodes.
