Opportunities for teachers

A number of professional development opportunities exist for teachers who want to develop links with schools internationally and learn from different pedagogies and  practices.  Many of these intiatives are funded by the DCSF.  Some of the experiences of our colleagues in Northumberland are detailed in this section.

If you have had a global experience that you would like to share or develop, then please contact the Cultural Diversity in Education team.

Teachers' international professional development programme TIPD

TIPD is a programme organised by the British Council using DCSF funding to develop links between UK and international schools.  It works by drawing  together networks of schools, headteachers and teachers and Local Authorities working in partnership to examine models of good practice.

The visits aim to help schools in the UK and other countries to develop world class standards through world class experiences.  TIPD is concerned with enhancing teaching skills through focussed study visits and exchanges, and providing breadth of understanding about the alternative pedagogies employed in different countries. What works in the classroom is the key issue, but an understanding of the process, content, environment and microteaching strategies is also crucial.

For UK schools, teachers engage and share in professional dialogue with colleagues across the world to demonstrate that what happens in classrooms in the UK can be influenced by positive examples from all over the world.
